Community Services Officer

Emel Tabaku

We are so excited to announce a new member of the MCASS team! Please welcome Emel who is joining us as Community Service Officer until August!

Emel Tabaku is an Albanian-Canadian artist currently based in Toronto, Canada. She is completing her last year in the Drawing and Painting program with a minor in Art History at OCAD University. Her works are deeply engaged with aspects of her Muslim Albanian heritage tying in history and layers of place to unfold memory through abstraction, collaging and layering of paint. Her material practice cannot be separated from the impressive depth of her research as she documents the struggles in shaping Balkan Muslim identities in North America.

Moreover, Emel brings over 2 years’ experience as program assistant in non-profit organizations. She specializes in grant research and writing, community program development, and multi-functional team coordinating. Familiar with diverse community engagement, Emel collaborated both in conversation with OCAD Student Union facilitating discussion series and events as well as with NGO management staff assisting in community development and capacity building projects. Emel currently volunteers as Program Support Officer with Unisphere Canada to support the development of innovative economic programs for marginalized low-income immigrants, newcomers and refugees across the GTA.

Emel will work in collaboration with us to help plan, develop and execute MCASS’s community programs, workshops and events. She hopes to develop a Digital Storytelling arts program for Muslim immigrants, newcomers and youth to express their various lived experiences, celebrate resilience and find creative ways to build more equitable communities.
